In the Minato Mirai 21 Heating and Cooling plants, we have very big machines for making hot and cold energy. Also, there is a control room where we check the temperature and amount of heating and cooling. Using computers, we carefully check to see how much energy each building is using.
The cool air for cooling space inside buildings is made from chilled water produced by several big chillers in the plant. This chilled water passes through underground tunnels linking all the buildings and it cools the air that flows through the rooms of the building, cooling the space. Minato Mirai 21 District Heating and Cooling has some of the world’s biggest electric turbo chiller in our plants. Just how big is it? This machine has the cooling power equivalent of 5,400 air conditioners like the ones used in your home.
The warm air for space heating is made from steam produced by several big boilers in the plant. The temperature of the steam is 170℃. Just like the chilled water, the steam passes through underground tunnels linking all the buildings and it heats the air that flows through the rooms of the building, heating the space. These boilers are also very big. A single boiler can heat 5,000 houses just like yours, and its output is the same as 10,000 stoves.
I’m sure that you understand now that the work of Minato Mirai 21 District Heating and Cooling is very important for protecting the beautiful natural environment of the earth.
But in protecting the earth, it’s very important for everybody to use electricity and other energy carefully and not waste it. For example at home, do you leave the lights on in an empty room, or leave the television on when nobody’s watching it? Do you leave the fridge door open? Global warming is partly caused by the large amounts of carbon dioxide emitted when we burn a great deal of fossil fuels, and also by wasting electricity and other energy. Also, trees and other plants absorb carbon dioxide for us. So let’s look after greenery and help it to grow. We should all think about the planet that we live on, and learn what we can do to help.
